The tradition of giving gifts to wedding guests is a very old one. It is believed that the first wedding favors, common amongst European aristocrats, were small trinket boxes made from precious stones, porcelain and crystal. The contents of these small boxes were sugar cubes and other sweet confections that symbolized European wealth and royalty. Hundreds of years ago, sugar was an expensive commodity. As sugar became more affordable, those of lesser means were able to incorporate the tradition of giving gifts to their wedding guests.
